WCEE’s Lunch & Learn Series Presents

The Role of Natural Gas in the US Economy

Natural gas is a U.S. energy resource that hydraulic fracturing has made more abundant and widely available than would have been thought possible ten years ago. The United States has experienced a transformational shift in the perceived role of natural gas, from an energy source seen as scarce to one that is recognized as an important component of a clean, domestic and secure energy portfolio. Today, natural gas meets more than one-fourth of the United States' energy needs.

Join WCEE to hear from two leaders in the industry, Dena Wiggins, President and CEO of the Natural Gas Supply Association (NGSA), and Lori Traweek, Chief Operating Officer of the American Gas Association, about how natural gas fits into our country’s energy future and how they rose to leadership in the energy world.

Our Speakers:

Dena Wiggins is President and CEO of the Natural Gas Supply Association (NGSA), representing major integrated and independent natural gas producers in the U.S.  NGSA is the only national trade association that focuses solely on producer-marketer issues related to the downstream natural gas industry.

Wiggins became President and CEO of NGSA in 2014.  Before NGSA, she was a partner at the firm of Ballard Spahr and served as General Counsel to the Process Gas Consumers Group, a trade association of industrial natural gas consumers.

Wiggins has over 30 years of experience representing energy clients, with a focus on federal regulatory matters including natural gas transportation and storage.  Wiggins has been involved in all the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s significant natural gas rulemakings in the past 30 years, including the restructuring of the natural gas industry through Order Nos. 436, 636, and 637.

She holds a B.A. degree from the University of Richmond and a J.D. degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Lori Traweek is Chief Operating Officer of the American Gas Association.  The American Gas Association represents more than 200 local energy companies that deliver natural gas throughout the United States.

Lori is directly responsible for overseeing AGA operations.  She has been integrally involved in AGA’s pipeline safety and environmental advocacy, including participating in the development of the EPA STAR program to encourage voluntary operations reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, serving on the executive steering team of the Department of Transportation’s distribution integrity management program, and participating in the launch of the Common Ground Alliance – a collaborative organization with the goal of reducing excavation damage of underground facilities.

Before joining AGA, Lori worked as an offshore and onshore engineer for Arco Oil and Gas Co. in Texas and Louisiana.  She holds a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and a B.S. degree in communications from Ithaca College.
