WCEE’s Lunch & Learn Series presents

Nuclear Energy 101

New technologies, legislation, experimentation, and more!

As we encounter a world considering a different energy mix for the future, nuclear energy is a controversial yet promising resource. Understanding this technology and how it has advanced over the years, is important to making informed policy choices. This event will focus on nuclear energy from an electric power perspective. We will introduce nuclear energy technology and discuss its successes and failures, legislation, and demonstrations.

Our Speakers:

From the moment Lenka Kollar stepped into her freshman nuclear engineering seminar, she knew that she would find her passion in bringing the many benefits of nuclear technology to people around the world. From energy production, to medical imaging and food irradiation, these technologies can help economies prosper and improve the quality of life for people while conserving natural resources. Experiences with the U.S. Department of Energy and International Atomic Energy Agency, along with pursuing an international MBA, led Lenka to her dream job at NuScale Power, where she is working to bring NuScale’s small modular reactor to market in the United States, and eventually emerging economies that need energy most. She has spoken at events such as Women in Cleantech and Sustainability at Google and at the UN climate talks, COP22 and COP23, on the importance of including nuclear energy, and the people that work on it, in the clean energy conversation. Lenka received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University and her MBA at INSEAD in France and Singapore. She also serves as an Executive Officer in the International Youth Nuclear Congress. In her free time, she enjoys exploring new places, hiking mountains, and reading sci-fi.

Spencer Nelson is the Program Director for Energy Innovation at ClearPath. ClearPath is a self-funded nonprofit focused on accelerating conservative clean energy policy solutions. Spencer coordinates all of ClearPath's policy solutions in nuclear energy and energy Innovation including research, strategy, legislative drafting and external affairs. Spencer joined ClearPath in 2015 and has previously worked on state-level solar policy. Previously, he conducted research on Thailand’s hydraulic fracturing potential at the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment in Bangkok, as well as environmental genetics research at UNC and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Spencer has degrees in Environmental Science and Quantitative Biology from UNC-Chapel Hill.
