COVID-19 Risk Mitigation in the Workplace:

A Novel Integrated Technology Approach

As workplaces start to bring people back to the office, employers will face challenges making sure their employees can return to work safely and maintaining the health of their workforce. Join WCEE for a presentation by experts about how COVID-19 risk in the workplace can be assessed and mitigated through a novel, integrated, technology-driven framework, with user privacy and security central to its design.

They will discuss how current technologies can support the three key elements of a company’s workplace risk mitigation plan: proximity monitoring and logging, physiologic screening and detection, and contact tracing. This interactive session from experts at Exponent will discuss technology-driven COVID-19 risk insights, important privacy considerations, and best practices for technology implementation and resultant data interpretation.

Dr. Erica Lively is a Principal Engineer at Exponent based in Menlo Park, CA. Dr. Erica Lively assists clients with the design and execution of data strategies for consumer products with advanced sensors. Her work incorporates engineering design principles with human factors to help clients understand the environmental and population factors most relevant to their technologies. She is skilled at designing, managing, and executing human participant studies for wearables, advanced imaging, and biometrics in global environments. Her experience helps clients build products that perform for a wide variety of users while preventing data bias, collecting personal data with consideration for privacy, and managing the risks associated with global data collection. Dr. Lively holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. As a Science Policy Fellow at the National Academy of Engineering, she participated in studies to improve healthcare through the implementation of systems engineering tools.

Dr. Scott McLean joined Exponent in early 2019 and is currently a Senior Manager within the company’s Biomechanics practice. He has considerable experience in applying state-of-the-art wearable technologies to the assessment and optimization of human health, wellness, and performance. His strengths in this area lie specifically in identifying and implanting optimal technologies based on client need, and the ability to interpret and distill the often large and unique data sets derived from these technologies into prioritized and actionable metric outcomes. He also possesses extensive expertise in designing client-specific data-driven frameworks and notification systems that directly support these efforts.

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. McLean was the Director of Human Innovation Research at Fitbit, driving several major research-driven health and wellness initiatives on a global scale. He was also a Professor at the University of Michigan, where he led nationally funded research into human wellness and performance optimization in real-world settings through state-of-the-art technologies and techniques. Dr. McLean completed his PhD at the University of Queensland, Australia, following which, he was a Project Staff Scientist and the Director of Sports Health and Orthopedic Rehabilitation at the Cleveland Clinic. He is a past president of the American College of Sports Medicine Biomechanics Group and a past executive council member of the International Society of Biomechanics.

Dr. Doruk Baykal is a Senior Manager at Exponent based in Menlo Park, CA. Dr. Doruk Baykal specializes in failure analysis, design and development of medical devices. Dr. Baykal has over 5 years of experience in designing and executing human participant studies for wearable technology development. This work entails observational clinical studies with a focus on clinical partnership management. Dr. Baykal’s area of expertise includes medical device design, design controls, biotribology, and wear testing of medical implants and biomaterials including polymeric and metallic materials. Dr. Baykal holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University.
