Don’t Get Caught: How to Prepare for Media Interviews

Monday, June 17, 2013

Are you anxious about speaking with reporters?  Preparing for your first radio or TV interview? Pitching media for background or feature stories?  Curious about strategies to handle difficult questions?

Join WCEE for a brown bag lunch on Monday, June 17, to learn interview strategies from experienced media trainers Thalia Assuras and Tracy Schario.  This session will cover the basics of building relationships with reporters, preparing for interviews, and executing a success interview.

Veteran journalist Thalia Assuras manages a consulting practice for strategic planning, media relations, crisis management, media training and executive coaching. She has performed at the highest levels of broadcast journalism as a national anchor and correspondent for ABC, CBS and Bloomberg networks in the U.S. and CTV and Global CanWest networks in Canada. She has reported, written and anchored coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; national elections and presidential summits; terrorism; natural
disasters; and countless other domestic and international stories. She has covered politics and public policy as a correspondent at the White House and Congress and received numerous awards and accolades throughout her 30-year career.

An award-winning public relations expert, Tracy Schario, APR, directs communications for The Pew Charitable Trusts’ clean energy program and teaches media relations/social media at The George Washington University, where she previously served as spokesperson. Tracy brings issues management, crisis communications and strategic planning skills to her advocacy portfolio at Pew. During Tracy’s 20-year career, she has worked at the U.S. Department of State in the Philippines and Indonesia, the National Utility Contractors Association and Strategic Communications Group, a PR firm supporting Fortune 1000 and startup technology companies.
