C3E Spotlights Women Leaders in Clean Energy Careers

By Caroline McGregor,
Office of International Affairs, U.S. Department of Energy

Women are accustomed to being in the minority at clean energy sector conferences — and in most science and engineering careers, for that matter. But for participants at the Women in Clean Energy Symposium, which took place at MIT on September 16-17, 2014, the tables were turned.

Women As 'Trusted Messengers' Has Advantages, Drawbacks
By Mandy Warner
Senior Manager, Climate and Air Policy, Environmental Defense Fund

Despite recent gains, women are still underrepresented among energy policy experts and practitioners, WCEE members heard from four thought leaders at a recent Women in Leadership Forum.

Possible connections between that fact and declining public trust of industry, media, NGOs and government were explored in the Sept. 9 luncheon at Clyde’s at Gallery Place that highlighted two corporate executives and one each from the government and not-for-profit sectors.

Non-Profits Bring Solar To Ivy City
Celebrating Launch of Grid Alternatives Mid-Atlantic with a Women's Build

By Tenley Dalstrom
Senior Energy Analyst, Energetics Incorporated

Grid Alternatives celebrated its Mid-Atlantic launch by partnering with Habitat for Humanity to install solar systems on 10 homes in Ivy City, a Northeast DC neighborhood.  Supported by a $2 million grant from Wells Fargo and donations from solar manufacturers SunEdison, SunPower and Enphase, the project provided an opportunity for upwards of 300 local people to help install 19 kW of clean, renewable solar power. I was fortunate to participate as a volunteer on a home that was an all-women’s installation, part of a broader effort to get more women involved in solar career opportunities.

Fewer Meetings, Please!
By Branko Terzic

A recent survey as reported in an Investor’s Business Daily article, “Keep meetings Short and Sweet” indicated that a majority of surveyed employees “…believe that 15 minutes of every hour spent in business meetings is wasted.”  My experience has been that more than 50 percent could be considered "wasted" and some were a 100 percent waste of time. What’s your experience been?
Here’s mine.
